The group started with a hot debut single for Singles Only (a label founded by Bob Mould, Maxwell’s Steve Fallon and radio DJ Nick Hill) then signed to Caroline, who released their first two albums, 1991’s Land Falls (featuring superb design by IPR’s Bruce Licher) and 1993’s Postcards From the Arctic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpringhouse were among the first Americans to cover My Bloody Valentine and share stages across the country with the likes of Ride, House of Love, The Chills, Psychedelic Furs, Belly and Lemonheads. The three are also fondly recalled for their utterly unique contribution to the original dreampop movement\/explosion: singer\/songwriter Mitch Friedland exclusively played small, nylon-stringed acoustic guitars, heavily processed through customized pickups with wicked effects, while employing an endless battery of alternate tunings. Amidst the trio’s melodic guitar-pop prowess, Friedland’s accentuation of latent sixties Britfolk underpinnings made them truly singular in the shoegaze\/dreampop era. Listening to \u003cem\u003eRobot X\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eXylophonics\u003c\/em\u003e side by side makes for a fascinating, and ever surprising, journey into experimental retro-futuristic electronica.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are more than 1000 tracks in Mark and Clive Ives’ archives (which collect material from the 1970s through 2005); over the last decade the brothers have been busy creating albums from these old recordings, sometimes overdubbing the existing tracks, sometimes adding newer contemporary music. To briefly describe their process: the two create short lists of the archives with sounds they feel complement each other (for instance, they can be melodic, or optimistic, or surreal…). Then begins the process of creating a track listing. Once they get something down to an album duration, they start listening… and there comes a concept, a title and the artwork for a new release.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat’s how \u003cem\u003eRobot X\u003c\/em\u003e was conceived, utilizing snippets of recordings made on a 4-track tape machine in the late 1980s. “One of our most abstract and surreal albums”, Clive Ives calls it. When the record was compiled in 2016, the brothers felt that the reality of humanoid robots being made and being used was immanent. This concept became the main inspiration for the album, fueled by the influence of Terry Gi\u003cem\u003elliam\u003c\/em\u003e’s 1985 masterpiece \u003cem\u003eBrazil\u003c\/em\u003e, with its blend of sci-fi and dark comedy. The story, set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines, proved influential for \u003cem\u003eRobot X\u003c\/em\u003e’s artwork, too: Clive Ives\u003cbr\u003ecollaged together various old industrial machinery etchings from the British Museum archives to create robots, coming up with something that is obviously not as practical and functional as modern (real world) robots are.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eXylophonics\u003c\/em\u003e was birthed through a similar process, reworking tracks found in the ‘90s section of the brothers’ spacious archive. Back then, they had just begun recording onto computers, and the album proved their first opportunity to properly link drum machines with keyboards, and create loops and multitrack more layers without the need of sound on sound on a tape deck. These recordings also find the brothers working on melodic pattern loops made with the tuned percussion instruments they’ve always had a special interest in (such as marimba, kalimba and xylophone), weaving those with drums, and creating a feel that is at once futuristic and optimistic in the process.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eRobot X\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eXylophonics\u003c\/em\u003e together tell a story of retro-futuristic visions from different angles: both proudly experimental, they combine a deluge of musical influences to offer something that is, quite remarkably, deeply layered and minimalist at the same time. But the live album is also a powerful reminder of Savage Republic’s flair for containing multitudes: those hardcore inclinations, so of their time they now sound timeless, are unexpectedly intertwined with a kaleidoscopic love of sound that still makes the band stand out from the rest of their contemporaries. Here, the hardcore and the arty are perfectly intertwined; the band emerges as one of the most politically engaged (and lucid) entities of the L.A. underground, while simultaneously reclaiming a love of styles and influences that might have seemed long forgotten by then (Eastern music being the most prominent one).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe four-piece appears to be at once trailblazing, sounding like no other band before or since, and eager to dig up its rich, often surprising lineage (they were embodying '60s California’s all-embracing curiosity better than most neo-psychedelic bands). In different hands this amalgamation of punk, industrial, art rock, psychedelia, Eastern sounds, avant-garde, no wave, surf and minimalism would have eventually proved contrived, pretentious, or at least confusing. But this is Savage Republic we’re talking about, and as the loud Whisky crowd—regulars mixing with friends, art school students mixing with tough punks—seems to suggest, it worked, as if by magic. Their first, self-titled LP appeared in early 1987 to widespread acclaim. “Almost every reviewer has considered them the most innovative band out of San Francisco in many years,” wrote Bob O’Brien in the LA Times. Soon thereafter signed to Rough Trade US, two more LPs and an EP would follow, all garnering much positive press. Second LP “Oriental Head” charted Top 35 at 160 radio stations, Top 10 at 48, and #1 at 9, but Rough Trade stateside was in shaky financial health and the label folded in 1990, with The Ophelias as part of the collateral damage. Lead guitarist David Immerglück was recruited by Camper Van Beethoven and Counting Crows, and bandleader Leslie Medford disappeared.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe star-crossed tale of The Ophelias (for instance, national tours in support of Pere Ubu and Crime \u0026amp; the City Solution both fell through at the eleventh hour) may be part of their Scarlet Pimpernell appeal, but to the band it was bad theater. Still, an informed few (like Music: What Happened? author Scott Miller) consider The Ophelias one of the very best bands of the 1980’s. As an outfit inspired by psilocybin should be, they were neither average nor predictable; indeed, contradiction was the group’s calling card. “The Ophelias are about the both of things: light and dark, masculine and feminine, high and low, comedy and tragedy, rationality and the unhinged,” said The Hard Report. There is no denying their post-punkish slant, but with perhaps more in common with the experimental and adventurous bands of the Sixties and Seventies, with an English bent and a Shakespearean name, things were certain to go awry in late-Eighties USA for an underfunded combo whose best comparison may be Spiders-era Bowie, Nadir-era Hammill, or Piper-era Floyd.
