You’re invited to find similarities in the way The Ophelias reclaimed San Francisco’s unfettered psychedelic rock roots at a time (the mid '80s) when the city had consigned itself to the commercial muscle of arena rock, and the way Half String brought a wide-eyed shoegaze revolution outside of '90s indie’s hotspots, heading the Beautiful Noise scene in Arizona.

What all the artists appearing in this decades-spanning, genre-defying compilation seem to have in common is a certain transfixing quality. As he uncovered demos recorded over some four decades (released in 2024 in the form of the acclaimed triple album Tracks From the Attic), he noticed that some songs were asking him to get reacquainted with them. He eventually complied, approaching material that sometimes he had no recollection of having written as when producing another artist’s music. The old demos became new demos: ideas reworked and sometimes radically transformed, lyrics adjusted when they showed a potential to narrate life in the not-so-roaring 2020s. Thus reshaped, the songs were shared with an ensemble that convened in the studio to breathe new life into them. Some are virtually unrecognizable, while some have kept their original form and charm intact – just developed and grown through the experience that comes with years of music making. It’s an arresting distillation of David J’s eclectic taste and the ever evolving musicality that came out of it: from the influence of late ‘70s New Wave to a lifelong love of classic country and Nick Drake-like romanticism.

Where the original Tracks from the Attic invited listeners to be present in the room as a young singer-songwriter found his own way (wandering in the fields of experimentation and collecting the meanderings that followed), the new album puts us in front of an artist who has honed his craft and mastered the art of pruning. Listening to Robot X and Xylophonics side by side makes for a fascinating, and ever surprising, journey into experimental retro-futuristic electronica.

There are more than 1000 tracks in Mark and Clive Ives’ archives (which collect material from the 1970s through 2005); over the last decade the brothers have been busy creating albums from these old recordings, sometimes overdubbing the existing tracks, sometimes adding newer contemporary music. To briefly describe their process: the two create short lists of the archives with sounds they feel complement each other (for instance, they can be melodic, or optimistic, or surreal…). Then begins the process of creating a track listing. Once they get something down to an album duration, they start listening… and there comes a concept, a title and the artwork for a new release.

That’s how Robot X was conceived, utilizing snippets of recordings made on a 4-track tape machine in the late 1980s. “One of our most abstract and surreal albums”, Clive Ives calls it. When the record was compiled in 2016, the brothers felt that the reality of humanoid robots being made and being used was immanent. This concept became the main inspiration for the album, fueled by the influence of Terry Gilliam’s 1985 masterpiece Brazil, with its blend of sci-fi and dark comedy. The story, set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines, proved influential for Robot X’s artwork, too: Clive Ives
collaged together various old industrial machinery etchings from the British Museum archives to create robots, coming up with something that is obviously not as practical and functional as modern (real world) robots are.

Xylophonics was birthed through a similar process, reworking tracks found in the ‘90s section of the brothers’ spacious archive. Back then, they had just begun recording onto computers, and the album proved their first opportunity to properly link drum machines with keyboards, and create loops and multitrack more layers without the need of sound on sound on a tape deck. These recordings also find the brothers working on melodic pattern loops made with the tuned percussion instruments they’ve always had a special interest in (such as marimba, kalimba and xylophone), weaving those with drums, and creating a feel that is at once futuristic and optimistic in the process.

Robot X and Xylophonics together tell a story of retro-futuristic visions from different angles: both proudly experimental, they combine a deluge of musical influences to offer something that is, quite remarkably, deeply layered and minimalist at the same time. Their first, self-titled LP appeared in early 1987 to widespread acclaim. “Almost every reviewer has considered them the most innovative band out of San Francisco in many years,” wrote Bob O’Brien in the LA Times. Soon thereafter signed to Rough Trade US, two more LPs and an EP would follow, all garnering much positive press. Second LP “Oriental Head” charted Top 35 at 160 radio stations, Top 10 at 48, and #1 at 9, but Rough Trade stateside was in shaky financial health and the label folded in 1990, with The Ophelias as part of the collateral damage. Lead guitarist David Immerglück was recruited by Camper Van Beethoven and Counting Crows, and bandleader Leslie Medford disappeared.

The star-crossed tale of The Ophelias (for instance, national tours in support of Pere Ubu and Crime & the City Solution both fell through at the eleventh hour) may be part of their Scarlet Pimpernell appeal, but to the band it was bad theater. Still, an informed few (like Music: What Happened? author Scott Miller) consider The Ophelias one of the very best bands of the 1980’s. As an outfit inspired by psilocybin should be, they were neither average nor predictable; indeed, contradiction was the group’s calling card. “The Ophelias are about the both of things: light and dark, masculine and feminine, high and low, comedy and tragedy, rationality and the unhinged,” said The Hard Report. There is no denying their post-punkish slant, but with perhaps more in common with the experimental and adventurous bands of the Sixties and Seventies, with an English bent and a Shakespearean name, things were certain to go awry in late-Eighties USA for an underfunded combo whose best comparison may be Spiders-era Bowie, Nadir-era Hammill, or Piper-era Floyd. The mass of American teenagers remained bewildered.

“It’s hard for me to imagine a more audacious guy than Ophelias singer/conceptualist Leslie Medford,” wrote Ann Powers in the SF Chronicle. “Collectors and critics will probably rediscover The Ophelias in fifteen years and write blathering essays about Medford’s psychosis-tinged genius.” Well, that time is now! Because in 2022 Bruce Licher’s storied Independent Project Records – known for its elegant, deluxe album packages – will release on compact disc and vinyl Bare Bodkin : a 15-song career-spanning compendium (including 5 remarkable, never-released studio tracks) of which Medford says, “I approached Bare Bodkin as if it would be the last will and testament of The Ophelias, as if it alone might be our legacy – a kind of personal statement about my feelings as to the prime aesthetic thrust of The Ophelias.” The band released many other memorable studio tracks in addition to those included on this compendium, and the live albums now streamable online offer the brain a veritable universe of surprising punk and psychedelia far more edgy and garage-y than Bare Bodkin – and it’s great bold stuff! But one must agree with Medford that at The Ophelias core is high-art high-drama lysergic dream theatre, and Bare Bodkin is a pretty perfect distillation of the multifaceted and strange magic of this remarkable band.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0804/6995/0701/files/499a8ae6-e1014b_37262cc3eb784b4fbef1f552499ee84b_mv2.jpg?v=1774300800
shiva-burlesque-mercury-blues-skulduggery-black-vinyl-double-lp
SHIVA BURLESQUE - Mercury Blues + Skulduggery black vinyl double LP

At long last, the double LP vinyl edition of the definitive expanded re-issue of Shiva Burlesque’s classic second album is now available. This new expanded and remastered (by Warren DeFever at Third Man Mastering) edition is now available for purchase.

Similarly to what Eno had done in the mid-'70s when he defined the context and nature of the newly baptized ambient genre, the late Barry Craig (A Produce) accompanied Land of a Thousand Trances with a press release that outlined the fundamental elements of what he liked to call trance music. “It can be as driving as the sound of world beat rhythms against modern day electronics,” he wrote, “or as subtle as the tinkling of Japanese bells mixed with background environmental sounds. Whatever the vehicle, the fundamental requirement of any style of trance music is that it sets up a rhythm (percussion), a sustained sound (drone), or a repetitive figure that over time, evokes a spellbinding hold on the listener, gradually drawing them deeper into the music, or trance.”

Transcendental at heart, A Produce’s trance language encompassed ambient, industrial, new age and so-called world music, only to go further. It was eager to find a direct line from Gregorian chants to Erik Satie, while tending to the needs of a fractured post-modern world. To anyone who cares about etymologies, it was also properly psychedelic. There is certainly a parallel to be drawn between A Produce’s work and that of some of his guiding lights: Terry Riley, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Harold Budd, Jon Hassell… But it is also true that the voracious, multitudinous nature of the perfectly titled Land of a Thousand Trances feels unprecedented and idiosyncratic. You could compare it to A Produce’s relationship with his city, Los Angeles, crucial muse since the post-punk days of his former band Afterimage: what he most loved about it was the simultaneous proximity of deserts, oceans, mountains and industrial metropolis.

In 2007 A Produce worked on a remaster of the album, adding a second disc featuring bonus material from around the same time the album was recorded. This second chapter in the Land of a Thousand Trances journey is ultimately as hypnotic as the first and original one: there are cuts taken from the same recording sessions that didn’t previously make the tracklist, as well as live renditions and alternate versions. It’s fascinating insight into A Produce’s mindset during a prolific, particularly inspired moment in his ever fascinating career.

The new deluxe remastered edition is housed in a package that proves one of Independent Project Records and Independent Project Press founder Bruce Licher’s most elegant designs (which, you’ll agree, is saying a lot). Evocative and seducing, it features some of Craig’s sublime landscape photographs — a perfect accompaniment for the pictorial dreaminess conjured by the sounds contained within.

Listen and what you’ll find is a music of many layers. A four-dimensional affair. You can float above it or fall deep into it. Most importantly, you can let it infiltrate your mind — boundless journeys await. Back in ‘94, A Produce talked of what he was seeking through sound: “personal, spiritual healing which, whether the world knows it or not, is what is needed now more than ever in our modern society.” Almost thirty years later, the need has done nothing but exponentially increase.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0804/6995/0701/files/6dd064e2-e1014b_8172575c301a45d7ade23cecb25d9823_mv2.png?v=1774300800
savage-republic-africa-corps-live-at-the-whisky-a-go-go-clear-vinyl-lp
SAVAGE REPUBLIC - Africa Corps Live at The Whisky A Go Go - Clear Vinyl LP

Now available is this beautiful vinyl edition of our Savage Republic release Africa Corps Live at The Whisky A Go Go 30th December 1981.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0804/6995/0701/files/4bebfe56-e1014b_37262cc3eb784b4fbef1f552499ee84b_mv2.jpg?v=1774300800
a-produce-inscape-landscape-cd
A PRODUCE - Inscape & Landscape CD

IPR is now able to offer original, sealed copies of A Produce's 1996 full-length CD Inscape & Landscape. The EP ends with “The Penstemon Field,” a 7+ minute epic sounding like something Ennio Morricone might have written for an Antarctic Western, with liberal fuzz guitar and haunting melodies. Licher’s mission is an exploration of sound that feels scientific and transcendental at the same time. This thoroughly inquisitive approach is made all the more clear (and intriguing) by the unexpected pairing of the original three tracks with ‘Number 09.’ Whereas ‘Peak,’ ‘Going Home' and ‘The Penstemon Field’ eagerly played with stretching the role of guitars and bass, ‘Number 09' takes its cue from the hypnotic synths of the Human League's The Dignity of Labour EP from 1979 and sets off for an unconstrained sonic trip that goes from the jarring to the meditative. Together, these four instrumentals make for a most entrancing experience.

The music of Exploratorium blurs the boundaries between Licher's cinematic work with Scenic and the early recordings of his UCLA days, which led him to start the Independent Project Records label in 1980. Perhaps even a touch of U2 here and there—'Flow' in particular—but done in a way that avoids suggestions of bad stadium ballads. Phil Carney and Bill Boyle, the guitar players in the band, make for a good team, avoiding rough crunch in favor of attractive digital delay swirl. It’s hard to fathom, but the four musicians had only been playing together for about eight months at that point, mostly rehearsing in the concrete parking garages at UCLA. Those formative experiences are brilliantly reflected in the sound of Africa Corps Live at The Whisky A Go Go December 30th 1981, with its hypnotic blend of industrial and piercing post punk. But the live album is also a powerful reminder of Savage Republic’s flair for containing multitudes: those hardcore inclinations, so of their time they now sound timeless, are unexpectedly intertwined with a kaleidoscopic love of sound that still makes the band stand out from the rest of their contemporaries. Here, the hardcore and the arty are perfectly intertwined; the band emerges as one of the most politically engaged (and lucid) entities of the L.A. underground, while simultaneously reclaiming a love of styles and influences that might have seemed long forgotten by then (Eastern music being the most prominent one).

The four-piece appears to be at once trailblazing, sounding like no other band before or since, and eager to dig up its rich, often surprising lineage (they were embodying '60s California’s all-embracing curiosity better than most neo-psychedelic bands). In different hands this amalgamation of punk, industrial, art rock, psychedelia, Eastern sounds, avant-garde, no wave, surf and minimalism would have eventually proved contrived, pretentious, or at least confusing. But this is Savage Republic we’re talking about, and as the loud Whisky crowd—regulars mixing with friends, art school students mixing with tough punks—seems to suggest, it worked, as if by magic. It consists of three instrumental tracks totaling 22:22 minutes, all layers of heavily effected guitars and bass. “Peak” opens the proceedings, a 9 1/2 minute atmospheric dronefest with shimmering guitars floating in liquid space, exploring territory similar to the closing number on Scenic’s ”The Acid Gospel Experience” CD, “A Journey Through The Outer Reaches Of Inner Space.” “Going Home” is another shimmering dronefest, with some shoegaze-style guitar sounds and sublime melodic structures.

While Greg Lisher is a familiar face to most fans of made-in-California alternative rock (thanks to his work with Camper Van Beethoven and Monks of Doom), 'Underwater Detection Method' sees Greg moving in a totally new direction. While not his first solo record, CVB and MOD fans likely will be surprised by the music on his new album. It has all the feeling of discovering a new artist for the first time.

“While many fans of Camper Van Beethoven and Monks of Doom know me strictly as a guitar player in an ‘alternative’ band, I purposely stepped outside my comfort zone making 'Underwater Detection Method,'” said Lisher. “I wanted to explore a completely different aspect of music that I love. This album might surprise a few people.”

After completing the guitar-based solo album 'Songs from the Imperial Garden' (a collection of instrumentals brimming with acoustic intimacy that he would release in 2020), Lisher thought it was time for something different. 'Underwater Detection Method' sees Greg for the first time writing songs using keyboards and exploring a new world of synthesized sounds. Always a lover of keyboards and synths, and of the more experimental excursions of favorite artists such as Brian Eno, Greg took the plunge and made the decision to finally release a solo album that was anything but guitar-centric.

The resulting 12-songs make for an instrumental record shaded with elements of art rock, ambient, dub and prog conjuring an inspired fusion that manages to split the difference between the melodic and the experimental. Some tracks seem born to accompany the emotional climax of an unforgettable movie, while others wouldn’t feel out of place in a volume of the KPM 1000 series. With this new self-produced album Greg approached songwriting with an open-minded disposition; he’d start songs by experimenting with sound collage which would take him to places he did not expect to go. “It’s like fishing,” he says, “I have no idea what I’m going to catch.” The album’s title reflects that analogy and reveals a most vibrant, creative eagerness. Lisher might have joined Camper Van Beethoven some 39 years ago, but 'Underwater Detection Method' shows that you never know when you’ll discover new things about yourself or the music you make and love.

This numbered Special Edition CD is packaged in Independent Project Records’ signature oversized CD pocket folder, featuring a 5-color custom design with metallic ink, a letterpress-printed glassine inner sleeve to hold the CD, plus a folding insert with credits and two perforated photographic insert cards.
